Meet Mishael, the Power to the She Award recipient from the Athleta Iron Girl Triathlon in Atlanta, Georgia on May 19th…

Mishael & DaughtersI became a widow when my husband died suddenly in April of 2007. I was pregnant and had a daughter who was not quite three years old at the time. Two months after my husband died, my second daughter was born. Three months after that, my mother passed away. I was thankful for my new baby, but overwhelmed with grief.

To overcome depression, I completed my first Iron Girl in 2009 and was honored to be an inspirational story for Iron Girl in 2010. Eating healthy and training for the Iron Girl really helped me regain my strength. I hoped it could do the same for other widows. So in 2013, I founded Team HOT Widow, the first US Widows Triathlon Team. The mission of Team HOT Widow is to empower widows and their families through Healthy, Optimistic, Thriving (HOT) life strategies in a supportive group environment. The amazing ladies in Team HOT Widow inspire me daily with their strength, wisdom, and determination. I am honored and blessed to call them my friends.

My life is not what I expected it to be, but with the love of family, friends and teammates, I am thankful that my life is now full of hope. Thank you Athleta Iron Girl for encouraging women from all walks of life to be empowered and look to the future with strength and a sense of adventure!
